Comparison
NMN vs NAD+ (NAD vs NMN): what is the difference?
NMN is a building block the body converts into NAD+, sold over the counter as a dietary supplement; FDA confirmed that status in September 2025. NAD+ itself is offered as compounded injections and IV infusions, which are not FDA-approved. Both can raise NAD levels in blood, but a 2025 meta-analysis found most NMN health outcomes no better than control.

Is NMN the same as NAD+?
No. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) sits one step before NAD+ in the body’s production line, and taking it raises NAD+ in the blood. NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is the molecule cells actually use to turn food into energy and repair DNA. Adv Nutr 2023
How are NMN and NAD+ regulated differently?
NMN is sold as a dietary supplement, which FDA does not review for safety or effectiveness before sale; FDA confirmed in September 2025 that NMN can be sold that way. Injectable and IV NAD+ are compounded prescriptions, allowed under FDA’s interim Category 1 policy while FDA evaluates NAD. That is not an approval. FDA
FDA’s September 2025 letters still require sellers to have a new dietary ingredient notification on file, and FDA did not evaluate NMN’s safety. Venable LLP
Does NMN or NAD+ have better evidence?
Neither has strong evidence for health outcomes. A 2025 meta-analysis of 12 randomized NMN trials found most clinically relevant outcomes did not differ from control, and cautioned that NMN’s benefits may be exaggerated. Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr 2025
For NAD, a 2024 systematic review found few side effects with oral supplementation but called for further studies to show clinical benefit. It included no IV studies. 2024
Which might suit whom: NMN or NAD+?
Neither is a proven anti-aging treatment, so the useful conversation is about expectations and safety. Questions to ask:
- What would we measure to know whether either one is doing anything for me?
- Is there any reason, such as a current or past cancer, to avoid boosting NAD?
- If I try NAD+ injections or IVs, which licensed pharmacy prepares them?
- Would an oral supplement make more sense than a compounded prescription for me?
DiscoverMedica does not recommend one over the other. Only a licensed clinician who knows your history can decide.

NMN vs NAD+: questions, answered
Which is better, NMN or NAD+ injections?
There is no good comparison. Both raise NAD levels in blood, and neither has shown clear health benefits in people. NMN is an over-the-counter supplement; injectable and IV NAD+ are compounded prescriptions that are not FDA-approved and depend on the pharmacy for quality.
Is NMN legal to buy in the US?
Yes. In September 2025 FDA said NMN is not excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement, reversing its 2022 position. Sellers still need a new dietary ingredient notification on file.
Is NAD+ FDA-approved?
No. NAD is in Category 1 on FDA’s 503A list, which means FDA is still evaluating it and allows licensed pharmacies to compound it for individual prescriptions in the meantime. That is not an approval.
What do NMN and NAD+ cost?
NMN: Listed starting prices run from $13.50 to $64.95 across 3 providers, checked October 7, 2026. NAD+: Listed starting prices run from $79 to $199 across 6 providers, checked October 7, 2026. Compounded NAD+ programs may add a membership fee, and listed prices change often.
