L-theanine vs melatonin: which is which for sleep?
Both are sold over the counter as dietary supplements, and neither is FDA-approved for sleep. Melatonin is a body-clock hormone whose best evidence is for jet lag. L-theanine is an amino acid from tea; a 2025 meta-analysis of 18 trials found small improvements in self-reported sleep, though few tested L-theanine on its own.

How do L-theanine and melatonin work differently?
Melatonin signals to your body clock that it is night, so it is mostly about timing. L-theanine is an amino acid from tea that is studied for calm and stress rather than for shifting the body clock. In a 2019 trial in 30 healthy adults, four weeks of L-theanine lowered stress, anxiety and sleep questionnaire scores versus placebo. Nutrients 2019
Is the sleep evidence stronger for L-theanine or melatonin?
Neither is strong for chronic insomnia. A 2025 meta-analysis found L-theanine modestly improved self-reported time to fall asleep, daytime functioning and overall sleep quality, but noted a lack of studies on L-theanine alone. Sleep Med Rev 2025
NCCIH says there is not enough strong evidence on melatonin for chronic insomnia, and that it may reduce jet lag symptoms after eastward flights. NCCIH
For chronic insomnia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine suggests clinicians not use melatonin (a weak recommendation). AASM clinical practice guideline
Are L-theanine and melatonin products reliably labeled?
Not always. NCCIH reports a 2023 study in which 22 of 25 melatonin gummy products were inaccurately labeled, with actual amounts ranging from 74% to 347% of the label. NCCIH
FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold, so a third-party testing seal is worth looking for. FDA
Which might suit whom: L-theanine or Melatonin?
Which, if either, makes sense depends on what is keeping you awake. Questions worth asking:
- Is my sleep problem about timing, stress, insomnia, or something else such as sleep apnea?
- Could either one interact with my medications, including blood thinners, seizure medicines or sedatives?
- Is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia an option for me?
- How long should I try something before we reassess?

L-theanine vs Melatonin: questions, answered
Is L-theanine or melatonin better for sleep?
Neither is well proven for chronic insomnia. Melatonin’s best evidence is for jet lag, and the AASM suggests against it for chronic insomnia. L-theanine showed small improvements in self-reported sleep in a 2025 meta-analysis, but many of the trials tested blends. Which fits depends on what is keeping you awake.
Can you take L-theanine and melatonin together?
That is a question for your clinician or pharmacist, who can check both against your medications. Many sleep products already combine ingredients, and the 2025 L-theanine meta-analysis noted a lack of studies on L-theanine alone, so it is hard to know which ingredient does what.
Do L-theanine and melatonin need a prescription?
No. Both are sold over the counter as dietary supplements in the US. Because FDA does not check supplements before sale, look for an independent seal such as USP Verified.
What do L-theanine and melatonin cost?
L-theanine: Listed starting prices run from $18 to $68 across 5 providers, checked October 7, 2026. Melatonin: Listed starting prices run from $6.99 to $16 across 5 providers, checked October 7, 2026. Listed prices change often.
