The pill, approved December 22, 2025, is taken once daily on an empty stomach; the injection is given once weekly and is also approved for teens and a liver condition. How do the Wegovy pill and injection differ?

The main differences are how often you take it, how you take it, and which uses are approved. Both are approved to reduce excess weight in adults and to lower the risk of major heart events in adults with heart disease; only the injection is approved for adolescents 12 and older and for a liver condition, MASH. How must the Wegovy pill be taken?

The trials point to similar results, but they were separate trials. On the label, average weight loss was 13.6% with the pill against 2.4% with placebo over 64 weeks, and 14.9% with the injection against 2.4% over 68 weeks. Wegovy label

Do the pill and injection have the same side effects?

Largely, yes. Both carry the same boxed warning about a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, and the label describes the tablets’ side effects as similar to the injection’s, led by nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain. Wegovy label

What should you ask a clinician when choosing between them?

The right form depends on your routine, your other medicines and what your insurance covers.

  • Can I reliably take a daily pill on an empty stomach and wait before eating or taking my other medicines?
  • Do any of my oral medicines need to be timed around the pill?
  • Which form does my plan cover, and what is the self-pay price if it does not?
  • Is either form a better fit for my heart, liver or other conditions?
