Lab test
A TPO antibody test measures antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme the thyroid uses to make hormone. High levels can be a sign of autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto disease or Graves disease. It is usually ordered after abnormal TSH or T4 results. ARUP Laboratories lists a reference interval of 0.0 to 9.0 IU/mL.

Thyroid antibodies are autoantibodies: proteins the immune system makes by mistake that can affect the thyroid’s ability to make hormones. MedlinePlus

Reference ranges differ between laboratories and testing methods, and many also differ by age, sex, pregnancy or the phase of the menstrual cycle. The range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result, and a clinician interprets it alongside your history.

DiscoverMedica explains what a test measures and what named sources publish. It does not interpret individual results; the clinician who ordered your test, or one you choose, does.
A clinician can order it as part of routine or follow-up care. Some services also let you order lab tests yourself; check that a service’s panel includes this marker, which laboratory runs it, and who reviews the result with you.
ARUP Laboratories lists a reference interval of 0.0 to 9.0 IU/mL for its TPO antibody test. Other laboratories use different assays and cutoffs, so compare a result with the range on your own report rather than with another lab’s number.
Not on their own. MedlinePlus explains that high TPO antibodies are a sign that Hashimoto or Graves disease may be causing a thyroid problem, but a diagnosis rests on thyroid hormone levels, symptoms and history together, as judged by a clinician.
Usually after TSH, T4 or T3 results are outside their ranges, to see whether an autoimmune cause is involved. It may also be used for people at higher risk, such as those with a family history of thyroid disease or another autoimmune condition.
