What is an AMH test, and what do AMH levels by age look like?

An AMH test measures anti-Müllerian hormone, made by the ovaries, as an estimate of ovarian reserve, the number of eggs remaining. It is mainly used in fertility care and cannot predict whether someone can get pregnant. ARUP Laboratories lists 0.401 to 16.015 ng/mL for women aged 18 to 29 and 0.176 to 11.705 at 30 to 39.

What does the AMH test measure?

The ovaries make AMH in females, and the testicles make it in males. Levels vary by sex and age. MedlinePlus

An AMH level gives an idea of ovarian reserve, the eggs left in the ovaries, which normally decreases with age. It cannot show egg health or predict pregnancy. MedlinePlus

Why is the AMH test ordered?

  • Mainly with other tests to make decisions about treating infertility, including predicting response to fertility medicine. MedlinePlus
  • As one input when PCOS is suspected; a high AMH can be a sign of PCOS, but AMH alone cannot diagnose it. MedlinePlus

What are typical AMH ranges?

ARUP Laboratories publishes AMH intervals that fall with age. ARUP Laboratories

Reference ranges differ between laboratories and testing methods, and many also differ by age, sex, pregnancy or the phase of the menstrual cycle. The range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result, and a clinician interprets it alongside your history.

What can affect AMH results?

  • No special preparation is needed for an AMH test. MedlinePlus

When should you talk to a clinician about a AMH result?

  • If you are trying to get pregnant, ask your provider to explain your AMH result in the context of your age and other test results. MedlinePlus

DiscoverMedica explains what a test measures and what named sources publish. It does not interpret individual results; the clinician who ordered your test, or one you choose, does.

Where can you get a AMH test?

A clinician can order it as part of routine or follow-up care. Some services also let you order lab tests yourself; check that a service’s panel includes this marker, which laboratory runs it, and who reviews the result with you.

AMH Test: questions, answered

What is a normal AMH level by age?

ARUP Laboratories lists 0.401 to 16.015 ng/mL for women aged 18 to 29, 0.176 to 11.705 at 30 to 39, 6.282 or less at 40 to 45, and 0.064 or less at 46 to 50. Ranges are wide and assays differ, so a fertility clinician interprets AMH with age and other tests. Men have much higher AMH, with ARUP listing 2.079 to 30.656 ng/mL from age 13.

Can AMH tell me if I can get pregnant?

No. MedlinePlus explains that AMH estimates how many eggs remain, but cannot show their health or predict whether you will be able to get pregnant. It is mainly used to plan fertility treatment. A high AMH can be one sign of PCOS, but MedlinePlus notes AMH alone cannot diagnose it.

Do I need to time an AMH test in my menstrual cycle?

MedlinePlus says no special preparation is needed for an AMH test. Some clinics still schedule it with other hormone tests that are timed, so follow the instructions you are given. AMH is also made by the testicles in males, though the test is mainly used in female fertility care.
